Armor skills

Ambush

This skill increase your attack by 5/10/15% after a successful Sneak Attack. Sneak Attacks have a 5min cooldown, you can’t spam them to renew the buff, even with a smoke bomb or the Ghillie Mantle.

Burst

Bowguns gets no elemental buff from Burst, only pure raw.

This skill grants 2 separate buffs. The first buff is triggered after one hit and grants +5 attack and an elemental attack buff depending on your weapon (30 for DB and bow, 50 for other weapons).

The second buff is triggered after 5 hits and is the same for every weapon aside from bow, bowguns, GS and HH.

Both buff expire if you stop attacking for:

  • 5s with a GS, a HH or a GL
  • 3s with DB, a LBG, a HBG or a Bow
  • 4s with any other weapon

Both buffs expire if you stop attacking for more than 3s.

Coalescence

This skill increases element and status damage for 30s once you get rid of a status.

[GS / Hammer / HH / GL / SA / CB / HBG] Element attack +30%
[All weapons] Status attack +15%

Elemental Absorption

Once you get hit by an elemental attack, the Elemental Absorption aura effect gets triggered for 2min. When the aura is triggered, you get a fixed elemental damage buff (depending on the weapon) and an elemental resistance buff (based on the element of the attack who hit you).

The elemental attack buff increase by 10 for up to 2 elemental hits endured after the initial skill proc. The elemental resistance buff adds onto itself for up to 2 elemental hits endured after the initial skill proc (if you use the lvl3 skill who grants you 8 elemental res, the second hit will raise the buff to 16 and the third to 24).

Once the aura runs out after 2min, you’ll have a 1 minute cooldown before the next skill trigger.

Skill levelEffects
1[DB / Bow] Element attack +30
[GS / HH] Element attack + 50
[Other] Element attack +40
+4 elemental resistance (based on the hit endured)
2[DB / Bow] Element attack +40
[GS / HH] Element attack + 80
[Other] Element attack +50
+6 elemental resistance (based on the hit endured)
3[DB / Bow] Element attack +50
[GS / HH] Element attack + 100
[Other] Element attack +60
+8 elemental resistance (based on the hit endured)

Convert Element

Once you get hit by an elemental attack, the Convert Element aura effect gets triggered for 2min. When the aura gets triggered, you get a fix dragon element buff (any other element won’t get increased).

No matter your element weapon, your weapon gains the ability to deal some special status damage with a 100% proc rate (unlike the regular 33%). The status damage is based on your elemental value (using a raw or status weapon won’t proc this skill special damage). Once this special status procs, the monster gets hit by a dragon element explosion. The explosion strength depends on the skill level and the dragon element HZV of the hitbox where it triggers. Like any regular status, it gets harder and harder to proc. Higher skill level also lead to easier procs, the status inflicted seems to be linked to the damage you’re dealing (your dragon element value doesn’t seem to matter for the explosion proc speed).

Do note that some attacks can’t deal this type of status damage. You can find which attacks here: https://lescarnetsdelawycademie.fr/special-damage-skills/

Once the aura runs out after 2min, you’ll have a 1m30 cooldown before the next skill trigger.

Skill levelEffect
1Dragon attack +60
Explosion damage = 150 + 60% of the dragon element HZV of the hitbox where it triggers
2Dragon attack +120
Explosion damage = 200 + 80% of the dragon element HZV of the hitbox where it triggers
3Dragon attack +180
Explosion damage = 280 + 100% of the dragon element HZV of the hitbox where it triggers

The dragon damage of the explosion can’t be increased with skills.

Counterstrike

This skill gets triggered once an attack knocks back your hunter. Despite this basic description, it can also be triggered with hyper armor moves (GS tackle, SnS Focus strike on a wound, SA grappling discharge or LS and SA counters to name a few). Offset moves can trigger it but only if the attack actually connects with your hunter and makes you lose some health during the Offset.

The Rocksteady Mantle can also trigger the skill without being knocked back.

Skill levelEffect
1Attack +10 for 30s
2Attack +15 for 35s
3Attack +25 for 45s

Flayer

This skill works like a status: you get a 50% chance of dealing flaying damage to the monsters. Flaying damage increase the wound damage you deal to a monster’s part, the amount depending on the skill damage.

Flaying damage adds up like any other status, the accumulation not being affected by the skill level. Unlike regular status, it’s linked to your weapon raw (sharpness and affinity have no effect on flaying damage). Once the status proc ceiling has being reached, you will deal a flaying explosion, dealing fixed damage to the last part you’ve hit. Like any other status, each subsequent flaying explosion becomes harder and harder to proc.

Do note that some attacks can’t deal this type of status damage. You can find which attacks here: https://lescarnetsdelawycademie.fr/special-damage-skills/

The skill also has an internal cooldown: if your attack deals multiple consecutives hits (bow arrows, DB moves for instance), only one hit can deal flaying damage.

Skill levelEffect
1Flaying: +5% wound damage
Flaying explosion: 140
2Flaying: +10% wound damage
Flaying explosion: 160
3Flaying: +15% wound damage
Flaying explosion: 220
4Flaying: +20% wound damage
Flaying explosion: 300
5Flaying: +30% wound damage
Flaying explosion: 400

Latent Power

The condition to trigger the skill are 2min into a fight with a monster or losing 125-130 HP. When one of these conditions is fulfilled, the buff is activated. You can take some damage willingly to trigger the skill before starting to fight at full strength.

Fainting disable the skill effects so stay careful.

Maximum Might

The affinity buff from that skill procs once your stamina is full for at least 3s. It has a great synergy with Second Wind, the Guardian Fulgur Anjanath skill set who grants you depending on its level a 25/50 bonus stamina gauge, this extra gauge acting as a buffer who lets you keep Maximum Might active.

Mushroomancer

This skill allows you to eat mushrooms to get various buffs. Mushrooms use the ancient potion animation when you eat them, granting their benefits pretty much instantly which can be great in a pinch.

MushroomEffectMinimum skill level required
Blue Mushroom35 health back (Potion)1
ToadstoolRed health regen +50% for 5 minutes (Immunizer)1
ParashroomDefense +15 for 30min (Armorskin)2
NitroshroomAttack +5 for 30min (Demondrug)2
Mandragora150 health back (Max Potion)3
Devil’s BlightRestores stamina and reduces stamina consumption for 5 min (Dash Juice)3
ExciteshroomAny one of the previous effects mentioned randomly3

Parashroom and Nitroshroom effects do not add up with Demondrug and Armorskin and get override by the stronger version of these items.

Partbreaker

This skill « increases damage dealt when destroying a wound with a Focus Strike ». It’s working as intended, it’s just that Focus Strikes works in a really specific way: when you do a Focus Strike, the game execute your weapon’s attack then adds a bonus hit who will destroy the wound. Only this bonus hit gets buffed by Partbreaker. You can find a full breakdown of this « wound destruction hit » in this article. Partbreaker obviously works with normal wounds and tempered wounds. It also scales when you destroy multiple wounds at once.

Do note though that due to its quite unique Focus Strike, bow « wound destructive hits » won’t proc Partbreaker.

Guard

Skill levelEffects

2Guard ceilings +20
Guarding stamina consumption -30%
3Guard ceilings +30
Guarding stamina consumption -50%

If you don’t know what guard ceilings are, I send you towards this dedicated article on how guard works in MH.

Guard Up

This skill allows you to block ordinarly unblockable attacks while still taking reduced damage in the process (since TU4, Guard Up also partially reduces damage while blocking regular attacks). In the previous MH entries, this list was pretty long but with Wilds guard revamp, it is way shorter here:

  • grabs (Ajarakan, Nu Udra, Guardian Rathalos, Guardian Fulgur Anjanath, Xu Wu, Guardian Arkveld, Arkveld, Seregios)
  • ground tearings (Doshaguma and Anjarakan, when they dig their paws into the ground before destroying a huge part of the floor in front of them)
  • Uth Duna’s giant wave (when it swins in the area 17 Great Lake of the Scarlet Forest)
  • Gravios gases
  • Zoh Shia AoE fire breaths in front of him
  • Seregios prey throw
  • Omega lasers (the ultra laser, the Lardboard/Starboard Cannon and the 5 lasers patterns on one or all its sides) and its Nerscylla « shotgun » exploding lasers in front of her
  • AT Nu Udra oil spilling into huge explosion

A few moves can’t be blocked no matter what. Those includes:

  • Jin Dahaad great thermal explosion (can be countered if you’re bold enough but you can also hide behind an ice block or go back to camp)
  • Zoh Shia phases transitions (you need to destroy the wilk crystals with elemental slinger ammos asap for these)
  • Omega’s Delta Attack (you need to defeat the Nerscylla clone asap to get a shield strong enough to avoid this move) and HP reduction projectiles

Slicked Blade

The Mizutsune weapon skill increase your affinity when you are wet or afflicted by bubbleblight. Both effects can be cumuled for an increased buff.

You’re wet:

  • as long as your feets are in the water or oil (Oilwell Basin)
  • for 20s after rolling in water
  • for 25s after walking in oil
  • for 50s after walking in deep oil

The summer festival also introduced the Water Gun emote. Getting shot with the Water Gun will make your hunter wet for the next 60s. You can get this effect in multiplayer obviously but also in solo by shooting at your poor Palico who will fight back by shooting you.

Waterblight does not count as being wet (bubbleblight too obviously).

Bubbleblight can be triggered by fighting Mizutsune or using its armor skill set Bubbly Dance.

Whiteflame Torrent

The Zoh Shia weapon skill allows you to deal bonus damage on your hits in similar way to Rathalos armor Scorcher or Nu Udra armor Bad Blood skills.

The game simulates the status damage 33% chance by selecting a random check number between 1 and 3, each check having an internal cooldown of 2,5s. The game confirms a check after its cooldown expires and an attack connect with the monstre, moving to the next check if there’s any left. Once every check has been confimed, Whiteflame Torrent triggers, dealing its explosion to the part you’ve just hit. The skill thus triggers randomly every 2,5, 5 or 7,5s as long as you keep attacking.

Whiteflame Torrent has some synergy with the Rathalos sets Scorcher skill. It replaces Scorcher’s damage and gets increased damage in the process. Just like Scorcher, Whiteflame Torrent also becomes able to be reinforced by fire elemental skills (Burst, Fire Attack, Gogmapocalypse, etc).

Scorcher levelWhiteflame Torrent damageBase Scorcher damage (comparison)
050/
160 + 70% of the fire HZV of the part where it lands20 + 60% of the fire HZV of the part where it lands
280 + 140% of the fire HZV of the part where it lands40 + 120% of the fire HZV of the part where it lands

Do note that some attacks can’t deal this type of status damage. You can find which attacks here: https://lescarnetsdelawycademie.fr/special-damage-skills/

Convert Thunder Resistance

The Lagiacrus weapon skill grants +4 thunder attack for every single thunder resistance point in your armor set. You can increase your thunder resistance with your base armor, food, HH songs such as Thunder Res and its Echo Bubble Defense & Elemental Res Up and obviously skills such as Thunder Resistance, Defense Boost or Elemental Absorption.

The Lagiacrus HH is especially synergic with this skill but quick reminder that there is a cap on element damage. The game calculates this value by adding 400 to the element value on one side and multiplying it by 2,3 on the other side then picking the higher value. With this formula, any weapon starting at 390 will use the 2,3 multiplier. Thus, with 450 base element, Lagiacrus HH cap is sitting at 1035.

Also, this skill buff procs after Thunder Attack calculations (regarding the % part of its buff).

Bladescale Honing

This skill triggers on perfect dodges. It does not restore your weapon sharpness, putting over your sharpness gauge what I’ll call the « Seregios sharpness ». The Seregios sharpness has a durability based on the weapon type (SnS & DB have 6 hits, Lance & GL gets 5 and other weapons gets 4). Its consumption speed is the same as for regular sharpness, with some weapons such as DB having decreased sharpness consumption on certains attacks doing multiples hits. You also lose this sharpness when blocking attacks with GS and CB, with less sharpness consumed on perfect guards.

Power wise, with a 1,4 sharpness multiplier, it’s 6% stronger than white sharpness and 16,7% stronger than blue sharpness (around purple sharpness strength, which isn’t available as of now in Wilds).

You can use this skill with a red sharpness weapon (with an horrendous 50% sharpness multiplier), trigger it with a perfect dodge to go straight to Seregios sharpness (with the glorious 140% sharpness multiplier)… And then go back to red sharpness once you’ve consumed the Seregios sharpness.

The Seregios sharpness is not affected by skills like Razor Sharp and you can’t renew it with a perfect dodge until you’ve used it all.

Bladescale Loading

With a bowgun, this skill gives the Bladescale property to base ammos. When you do a perfect dodge, you get 3 Bladescale ammos on top of your original clip, 40% stronger than base ammos. These Bladescale ammos are buffed by the skills affecting their original ammos type (Normal Shots, Piercing Shots & Spread/Power Shots). They’re also shared between all the bad ammos (if you shoot one Normal Bladescale ammo out of 3 and switch to piercing ammo, you still have 2 Piercing Bladescale ammos available).

For bows, a perfect dodge gives you 3 Bladescale coatings on top of your current coating, granting you a 25% damage buff. Bladescale coating are shared between all coatings if you happen to swap.

Power Stone

Available on the SnS and the LS from the double Gravios event quest, this skill increase your attack by a fix amount depending on the rarity of the ores you’ve gathered (which means mining but also through wound/part destruction on specific monsters like Gravios or Gypceros for instance). The attack buff has a cap of +90 attack and lasts for 90s after the last gathered ore. Weapon switching removes the buff unless it’s between the event LS and SnS.

Ore gatheredAttack buff
Rarity 4: Iron Ore, Machalite Ore, Dragonite Ore, Earth Crystal, Firestone, Icium+10
Rarity 5 & 6: Carbalite Ore, Fucium Ore, Gracium, Lightcrystal+15
Rarity 7: Firecell Stone, Novacrystal+30

Getting multiple ores at once will be reflected on the buff (getting 3 Iron Ore will give you 3 times +10 attack). The lvl3 Geologist skill adding one more ore on top of everything you mine, it thus decrease how many time you have to mine to max out the attack buff.

Crackling Cornpopper

This skill increases the Cornpopper GL shot and wyrmstake explosion raw damage by 35% and add +3 fire attack to these moves as long as you don’t have any Wyvern Fire charge.

Grillmaster

This skill increase the Well-done Blades affinity and element for a set duration based on your last meat cooked.

Cooking resultEffect
Well-done Steak+10% affinity and +300 element for 5min
Rare Steak+10% affinity for 1min30
Burnt Meat+300 element for 2min30

The buff doesn’t stack and cooking a new meat will override the previous buff.

Darkside

When you use a lvl2 or 3 charged attack with the Omega GS, you convert 20HP as red recoverable health and get a 10% raw buff for 30s if the skill can be triggered. The damage buff can’t be cumulated and has a 15s cooldown before it can be triggered again once the buff expires (the health conversion effect will still trigger though despite not getting the damage buff).

Weapon swapping removes the raw buff.

Synthetic Shield

The Omega SnS skill grants a +30 defense buff for you and nearby allies for 30s after a perfect guard.

This skill synergies with the 4 pieces Omega armor skill Resonance II. Once this armor skill is active, the weapon skill grants +45 defense for 45s instead.

Weapon swapping removes the defense buff.

Synergy

The Omega IG skill grants a 15% affinity buff for you and nearby allies for 45s after a Rising Spiral Slash.

This skill synergies with the 4 pieces Omega armor skill Resonance II. Once this armor skill is active, the weapon skill grants 25% affinity for 60s instead.

Weapon swapping removes the affinity buff.
